Built for a week at home without power or gas

Most power cuts are fixed within hours. The Home Prep Kit is designed for the rarer, longer outage: several days when the heating, lights, Wi-Fi, mobile signal and card payments may not work. The UK Government's Be Ready checklist asks households to be ready for 3 days; this kit is sized to go to 7.

Hour 1

Light and information

Lantern on, head torch on. Wind up the radio for local news and check whether the cut is just your home.

Day 1–2

Warmth and power

Choose one warm room. Layer fleece and foil blankets. Keep phones charged from the solar power bank.

Day 3–5

Food, water, hygiene

Eat fridge food first, then tins (manual tin opener). Wipes and sanitiser save water.

Day 6–7

Stay steady

Recharge by window light and hand crank. Check on neighbours. Follow the printed plan.

Why the kit is built around a wind up radio and torch

When the power and internet are down, a wind up radio and torch is the most reliable way to hear local news and see what you are doing. Ours is a hand-crank solar emergency radio: one minute of winding gives several minutes of listening, the solar panel tops it up on a windowsill, and the built-in torch and USB port mean it doubles as a light and a phone charger.

The UK Government's Be Ready guidance suggests a battery or wind-up FM radio and writing down the frequencies of your local and national stations. The printed plan in the kit has space for exactly that.

A power cut kit that is safe indoors

Every item is chosen to be safe to use inside a home. There are no candles (torches are safer, as Government guidance says), no camping stoves or gas canisters (a carbon monoxide risk indoors and banned from post), no fuels, no blades and no medicines.

Light comes from LEDs, warmth from layers, and power from a 10,000mAh solar power bank: enough for several full phone charges, and small enough to ship legally and safely. If you have a gas boiler, fire or cooker, we also recommend a battery carbon monoxide alarm; it is available as an add-on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Home Prep Kit?

The Home Prep Kit is a home emergency kit for UK households. It contains 18 practical items, including a wind up radio and torch, a rechargeable lantern, a solar power bank, blankets, hygiene supplies, a first aid kit and a printed plan, so you can stay safe, warm and informed at home through a power cut of up to a week.

How much does the Home Prep Kit cost?

The Home Prep Kit is £150 including VAT. The notification list is free to join. When secure checkout opens, paid Winter 2026 back orders are charged in full at checkout, with free UK delivery.

Does the kit follow UK Government advice?

The UK Government's Be Ready guidance asks households to be ready for 3 days, with water, food, a torch and spare batteries, a battery or wind-up FM radio, a charged power bank, blankets, hygiene items and a first aid kit. The Home Prep Kit covers the non-food items on that list and is sized for a full week. We are independent and not endorsed by the UK Government.

Does it include food and water?

No. Food and water are personal and bulky, so we leave them out and include a printed stock-up list instead. Guidance is 3 litres of bottled water per person per day for drinking, plus tins and dried foods you already eat.

Why a wind up radio and torch rather than a battery radio?

A wind up radio and torch keeps working when batteries run out. Our radio can be powered by winding, by its solar panel or by USB, receives AM and FM for local news, and has a USB output to top up a phone.

Is anything in the kit dangerous to post?

No. There are no gas canisters, blades, fuels, matches or medicines. The power bank and radio contain small lithium-ion batteries that are built into the devices and under carrier limits, and they ship with a tracked courier.

Will there be video guides?

Yes. Each item will have a short video showing how to use it, plus a series on getting through a week without power at home: lighting, staying warm, food and water, keeping phones charged and staying informed.

Can I buy the items separately?

Not at launch. The kit is designed as a complete set so nothing is missing when you need it. Refill packs, including batteries, wipes and sanitiser, are planned.
